Projects
Introduction
We work in a number of ways to ensure our water quality and its ongoing supply. Highlighted below are ways we do this through planning, projects, and programs.
Planning Projects
Managing our groundwater means proactively monitoring and planning for it. Here at MSGBW we are utilizing specific tools like Operating Safe Yield Report (OSY) and the Groundwater Level Contour map to effectively manage our groundwater. Additionally, we have established initiatives like the Five-Year Water Quality and Supply Plan, and Salt and Nutrient Management Plan to ensure the high quality of our shared resource, our groundwater.
Operating Safe Yield and Groundwater Level Contour Map
Our Rules and Regulations state: "Watermaster shall annually determine the Operating Safe Yield applicable to the succeeding Fiscal Year and estimate the same for the next succeeding four (4) Fiscal Years.” The OSY establishes the rate at which groundwater can be withdrawn from our basin without causing long-term damage. View this year’s Operating Safe Yield Report here, and the link below provides links to past years going back to 2015.
Groundwater Level Contour Map: This is a topographical map of the groundwater basin that defines the elevation changes and shape of it. See the groundwater level contour map here.
Five-Year Water Quality Supply Plan
Another essential part of our water management is ensuring a high level of water quality. The links below detail our annually prepared with information on our plans to keep our water supply steady and our water quality high. Current plan can be found here.
Salt and Nutrient Management Plan
As required by the State Water Resources Control Board and Resolution 2009-0011, the Salt and Nutrient Management Plan must be prepared for all groundwater basins. The Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster is the lead agency for the preparation of the San Gabriel Basin SNMP. The primary stakeholders include Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, Three Valleys Municipal Water District, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.
Capital Projects
Watermaster, along with six other water entities, signed a landmark agreement for groundwater cleanup in the Baldwin Park Operable Unit. As a result of the negotiated agreement, responsible parties agreed to pay millions of dollars toward research, cost recovery, and treatment plant construction and operating expenses in the cleanup effort. This project is underway and you can learn more by clicking the link below.
Programmatic Projects
We also have strategic internal programs that help us track water-levels and quality. The Basin Groundwater Elevation Monitoring program established a network of wells in the Basin that are routinely measured to keep us informed on our water-levels.
Additionally, we are working with our partners at the Metropolitan Water District as part of their Regional Recycled Water Program. This program is aimed at easing the strain on our regional water supply during droughts by providing a reliable source of replenishment for our water, specifically imported water that isn’t always readily available.
